Yay Co+Rulers! I like this outcome definitely saw Viserys refusing to have her as Queen because of his own issues (Family deaths, Rogares), and the realm being what they are (Patriarchy and the Dance) but this definitely works.
Not to mention with Daemon Targaryens as a child… Ideally the best outcome would be for both Rhaena and Elaena to have daughters, which would tie up the line of succession nicely by the 2nd or 3rd generation (assuming Daemon’s first wife has a son/daughter and his 2nd has the opposite).
I’m guessing the other bastards are going to still be a thing though because Aegon is still around but at the very least they won’t be Great Bastards. Who knows might even be able to get Bittersteel and Bloodraven on the same side in this universe.
Glad you liked the Co-Rulers approach! Was it innovative and unique?
We shall see what the kids of these first pregnancies all end up being! Ditto for the other bastards! I think I’ve some fascinating plans cooked up.
I certainly don’t mean to offend the author, but I find these complications unnecessary. It would have been far better to simply get rid of Aegon prematurely. Daeron caused Baelor’s death and wasn’t troubled by it; Aegon’s death wouldn’t have bothered him either. He could have befriended his father, gone hunting with him, and one day served him stronger wine. He could have goaded him into hunting a boar; a drunken Aegon would have missed his mark and died. Then, after Viserys’s death, he could have become king himself. That would have simplified everything. The throne ought to belong to a male Targaryen; women of the dynasty should only have a claim to the throne after the men. This is a guarantee of the preservation of the Targaryens, protection from usurpation, protection of princesses from the Targaryen dynasty from forced marriages for the sake of power. The king is the protector of the state, the commander of the army. This is his duty.
Daeron caused Baelor’s death only indirectly and he was really only just hoping for it. Killing Aegon is much easier said than done.
And the explanation was already given on why Daeron becoming King in his own right leads to a Wars of the Roses scenario tbch. What happens if a younger son by Daena tries to usurp an older son by Rhaena or Maekar? Or their descendants etc? And argue it is rightfully theirs by primogeniture?
And what about the other children? What if the boy is born to the middle or youngest sister? He’ll be the firstborn of his father, the king, and yet he’ll still be left with nothing. The perfect pretext for some segment of the aristocracy to tell the prince that he’s been treated unfairly and that a child born to Daena has no right to the throne, since the throne passes only through the male line. And there’s precedent for this. Men come before women. You could end up with a Blackfyre Rebellion on an even grander scale—an even greater mess. But what worries me most is this setup involving a ruling queen, a ruling king, and the fact that he has two other wives. That is what really troubles me. Now, a king with three queen consorts—that’s imaginable. Difficult, perhaps, but possible. The Conqueror had two, and that was fine; one more or one less wouldn’t matter. But this specific arrangement… If it were just Daena, there wouldn’t be any issues.
Are we talking about a situation where that son is the only son or he has younger brothers born from the senior wife? If it’s the former then he just married his half sister from that senior wife and becomes King, simple. End of story. If it’s the latter then it’s a potential issue yes but the reverse I told you about is just as true. The problem is the competing laws of succession and no matter how much people reee short Westeros being sexist, it remains undeniable that the law of the land is that sons inherit first and then daughters and only then brothers. It is not male >>> everything else. With incest they can consolidate competing claims too. But a stable line has to be preserved in some way. See the issue here is that Daeron rules by right of wife so he cannot delegitimise the succession law that makes him King in the first place and to male-only. He could have potentially gone male-only but he didn’t want even the chance Aegon could ever sit the throne so sought to bypass him completely. So this is what he’s come to. Making the best of a bad situation. It’s just obvious to anyone that the heirs are the children of the King and Queen not the children of the King and Princess. And it abides by primogeniture too. Are there still potential risks and etc? Ofc. But he’s made the best of a bad card and those potential complications are what make it so interesting anyway. Not everyone has to be a perfect minmaxxer that always charts the 100% most perfect route imaginable for all eternity. What works for 1 generation doesn’t always work 5 generations down the line.
This is your work. I have absolutely no doubt about your talent; your work is of high quality. I am merely expressing my concerns.
It’s ok. Appreciate it.
Now that dragons are back, another Dance of the Dragons feels inevitable. Maybe not in the next generation, or even the one after, but within a few generations, it’s hard to avoid. Imagine a dragonrider with several dragonriding siblings and powerful allies being told he can’t be king because a distant cousin has the better blood claim. Why would he simply accept that?
A possible solution would be to create a council of dragonriders that helps decide the succession, rather than relying entirely on hereditary claims. That way, the most capable candidate could be chosen, and it might reduce the chances of another civil war. but its just something i thought about it’s your story u do u , nice story by the way
Why is a Dance automatically inevitable just because dragons are back? Bear in mind how the Dance started, through a succession that was made as retarded and convoluted as possible.
I think this so-called council would perpetuate a civil war much more than an actually stable and ironclad succession system would.
That is exactly what Targaryen history teaches us. If someone believes they are more capable than the heir or king, they are unlikely to accept being ruled by them. If they also have dragonriders who share that belief, rebellion becomes likely.
We see this pattern throughout Targaryen history. Maegor rebelled because he refused to accept being passed over as the second son. During the Dance, Aemond nearly killed Aegon because he believed Aegon was king only by being born first and saw himself as the better ruler. Daemon and Viserys had a similar dynamic, but Daemon loved his brother, which kept that rivalry from turning into murder.
In the end, Targaryen history shows that conflicts between dragonriders are almost inevitable. My council idea doesn’t prevent another Dance, it simply reduces the chances of one becoming as devastating as the original
Out of curiosity, have you read the D&C Appendices? Especially the Dynastic Laws?
